According to the United Nations the world’s population will grow by more than two billion people by 2050. According to its forecast half will be born in sub-Saharan Africa, and another thirty percent in South and Southeast Asia. Those regions are also where the effects of climate change - including droughts, heat waves or extreme weather - are expected to have the biggest impact. Last year the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said that the world’s food supply may already be under threat. “In the last 20 years, particularly for rice, wheat, and corn, there has been a slowdown in the growth rate of crop yields,” said a climate scientist and one of the authors of the IPCC report.
“In some areas yields have stopped growing entirely”.
Against the backdrop of such dire predictions the EU has announced plans to drastically reduce consumption of mineral fertilisers and synthetic pesticides, boost organic agriculture and decarbonise the economy. Everywhere there’s talk of cutting greenhouse gases, reducing water consumption, mitigating the effects of climate change, and much is being written and said about the so-called circular economy.
